Not far from the Kopitiam, just a few doors away, there's a cafe that sells soy products.

We went in for a drink, the banana soy ( with less sugar ) taste good. Love the banana flavor in the drink, it didn't taste like chemical flavoring at all.

So if you are around for the pig knuckles, do drop by this cafe for a cup of soy drink.

Went to the Kopitiam at 300 Joo Chiat Road for Teo Chiew Porridge this afternoon.

The pig knuckle was delicious, better than most I've tasted. It's chewy with collagen, but not oily. The meat was not overly salty and has a nice fragrance. Feel so contented after I empty the bowl.

On lunar new year eve, just as I was driving out of the carpark to head for my reunion dinner, I heard strange noises.

I stopped the car and got out to take a look and discovered that the front left wheel got a puncture. I drove back to the carpark and used Derrick's car instead.

As it's CNY, all mechanics are closed for the public holidays. I tried to change to the spare tire this morning so that tomorrow I could drive it to a mechanic. I've replaced tire before so it is not a challenge for me. As I was changing the tire, I realized that the floor is not concrete road but there are holes and the jack could not rest firmly on the floor. So a problem arose while I was trying to solve the first problem. I managed to shift the car back a little and found a spot where the jack could rest firmly on the concrete floor, but only after screwing back all the nuts which i had already unscrewed.

Life is like that, and many times, problems keep arising while you are trying to find solutions. And it always happen to me. But I guess we just have to be very focused to solve all problems, no matter how many more will arise along the way, ultimately everything will turn out well. Never give in to life, take each problem at a time and you will triumph over all the stumbling stones.

When life gives you lemons, it sucks but turn them into lemonade, never ever give in to life's challenges!

I had my lunch at Ramen Monster at Novena Square 1, opposite Spinelli coffee.

The pork broth soup base was tasty, I finish every drop of the soup. You could taste the natural sweetness of the pork in the soup.

Ramen Play

I had my lunch at Ramen Play at 313 Orchard this afternoon. The restaurant is situated at B3.

Service was good and the hotstone rice which I ordered was delicious. The hotstone kept the rice hot the whole time. The rice was cooked to perfection and the sauce fragrant the rice mildly and not over salty. The lower layer of rice was slightly burnt to crispy perfection.

Will definitely go back again to try the ramen.

I hardly drink soft drinks or carbonated drinks. I recently bought this to try and immediately fell in love with it.

It tastes really like fresh Yuzu. Tangy and refreshing and hardly too sweetened.

I guess this drink will find a permanent place in my fridge.

I went to collect my glasses today.

This pair is with progressive lens, which allows me to see far yet assist me with near readings.

As I age, I could feel the body's wear and tear. My eye sight is failing me, my knees are week and i no longer could jump any more. My back aches if I sit too long on the floor.

But thanks to science and technology, we still have inventions that despite the body tearing down, still able to have some quality life.

Ever since I got my kindle In May last year, I've read 35 books.

I've never read so many books in a single year before. I read for pleasure and mainly read novels. A friend commented that I read junks.

Haha! Junk or no junk, the kindle provides me with many hours of pleasure.

I've still got hundred over books downloaded in my kindle, most of them downloaded free from amazon.

Ebook reader is one of those inventions that is really remarkable.

A must get item if you love reading.

A brand new year

Time and tide wait for no man. It's a brand new year again. 2011 just slip by so hurriedly.

It's a strange feeling to wake up in a new year. Perhaps there's much apprehension to go through the whole cycle again.

Thinking back, I don't think I've accomplish much in 2011, maybe I didn't even set out to accomplish anything.

So for 2012, what is it that I want to achieve? Perhaps I seriously need to think through.

Nevertheless, we will hope that 2012 will be a better year than the last. With less calamity and more world peace!

10 days at Cambodia

Many were dumbfounded when I told them I'm going to Cambodia for 10 days.

What's there to do for such a long time?
Well, apparently we just eat, relax, eat, relax and sleep. Of course we do shop around but the little town has not plenty to offer in terms of shopping. There are many markets and night markets but mostly selling the same things.

Derrick bought a bronze Apsara figure at the old market. We managed to bring the price down from USD140 to USD 95.

For the 10 days, we stayed at three hotels, Raffles De Royal, hotel De La Paix and Le Residence De Angkor. Of these, I like De la Paix most for it's modern clean cut feel. Next I love Raffles for it's colonial English ambiance and third on my list will be Le Residence, which has it's charm with the lush greenery surrounding it's green tiled lap pool.

Very relaxing indeed!

Angkor Wat

We woke up at about 4 am to get ready to catch sunrise at Angkor Wat. The driver was waiting for us at the hotel lobby when we were there at 5 am.

It was a short distance from our hotel to the temple. It was still dark when we reached there. There were already many early risers there all surrounding the pool on the left side of the temple. We guessed it must be the best spot to catch the sunrise.

The sun took it's time to rise, more slowly than I expected. The sight was not spectacular, not as I've imagined it to be, whole sky colored orange.

Nevertheless I'm glad that I made the effort to go see the sunrise. If you made effort to accomplish something, I guess it's rewarding when you finally savour the reward.

The blue pumpkin

The blue pumpkin is an ice cream parlour cum cafe. I love the ice cream - tried the passion fruit, Ginger n black sesame n dark chocolate.

Also love the setting, there is bed-like lounge sofa against the walls where you could lie down n relax.

Prefer the outlet at Phnom Penh better, bright and spacious overlooking the Mekong river.

Siem Reap

Having breakfast at Hotel De La Paix courtyard now. We are sitting on this huge suspended platform. The morning breeze is really cooling, it's winter season now and I really love the coolness.

We arrived at Siem Reap yesterday after about 5 hours car ride from Phnom Penh. We were debating of what transport to take, but the camry Toyota which we hired was comfortable enough. We paid USD60 for a one way trip.

Today have to try to arrange for a tour to Angkor Wat tomorrow. Trying to catch sunrise at Angkor Wat.

Needed to use toilet so came to KFC at Bedok central. Wah! The toilet is nicer than my house toilet.

The outlet is newly renovated and everything is new n nice. They even have a new system whereby you just order at the counter and then given a number, then wait for your number to be called at the serving counter.
I like it, no more queue at the counter and wait for the counter staff to prepare the food for serving.

It's great that they make a change for a system they used for so many decades.

Colonoscopy

I went to have my colonoscopy at Changi General Hospital today. I reported at 9.45am for my 10 am appointment.

I was showed to the ward where one other guy was already waiting for his scope. While waiting, three other guys came in too for their scope.

I changed into the garment I was given and lay on the hospital bed to wait to be called for the scope. Initially I was calm, but as one by one the others were wheeled for their scope, eventhough I was there first before three of them, I got agitated. And anxiety increased.

By the time I was wheeled in, it was 1.10 pm.

This time round, the LA that they administered to me did not knock me out. I was just in a daze and could see my intestines on the monitor. I could feel pain at a certain point of the procedure.
The whole experience made me feel like I'm in a production line, waiting for my turn to be wheeled in to the assembly line, just that this assembly line did not practice first in first out method.

I'm still waiting for them to discharge me which must be 2 hours after the procedure so that the LA would wear off.

For a simple procedure, I actually wasted 3 hours waiting and from the window I'm looking out now, a storm is approaching. Luck has never been on my side.

The tour guide offered some ripe coffee seeds for me to taste. The coffee seed actually was tasteless. Nothing like the aromatic roasted coffee bean.

It took a while to learn how to fold the pleats.

电饭煲巧做什锦饭

原料(3人份)：
东北大米300克、猪瘦肉500克、广式香肠300克、香菇100克、胡萝卜100克、玉米100克、黄瓜200克

做法
1．将大米洗净泡10分钟。
2．肉切片依个人口味加调料，入味30分钟。
3．香肠切片。
4．香菇、玉米、胡萝卜、黄瓜切块，入水煮熟。
5．将泡好的米放入电饭煲，按说明加适量水；按加热键开始煮饭。
6．米饭就做好后，打开锅盖，加入猪瘦肉和香肠，再盖上锅盖，继续加热。
7．5-8分钟后，打开锅盖，把香菇、玉米、黄瓜倒入锅中，充分搅拌后即可食用。

电饭煲腊味饭

省去制作砂锅煲仔饭的漫长时间，却并没有损失口感，香糯美味，操作简便，不能不说是一个创造。

用料:

广式腊肠               1根（约100g）
腊肉                   1小块（约100g）
四川麻辣肠             1根（约100g）
大米                   200g
油                     2汤匙（30ml）
盐                     1茶匙（5g）
生抽                   1汤匙（15ml）
香葱（或大葱的绿色段）适量

做法:

1.洗净的大米放在电饭煲里，调入油（1汤匙，15ml）、盐拌匀，加入1:1的水。
将广式腊肠、腊肉和四川麻辣肠分别切薄片，整齐地码放在锅里大米的表面，连接电源开始蒸饭。

2.中火加热小煎锅中的油（1汤匙，15ml），至油冒烟沸滚，关火，放香葱段（或大葱的绿色段），拨炒几下出香味，调入生抽。即成调味汁。

Like SB said, baking is a science, every ingredient must be measured to precision. Every step must be accordance to the instructions, other wise the final products might not be what it should be.

We just watch the demo and took notes, so to learn it, I guess we have to put to practice, other wise, it's just theory that we learnt.

Two weeks ago, Derrick's D&G jeans and a sweater went missing. We have checked with the two people that had come to the house, a friend who came to puck up her things and the cleaning lady, both said they have not seen them.

Yesterday, I wanted to use a flask which we bought from Japan, but couldn't find it after searching high and low.

What's happening here?

Could it be some one else?

I've been thinking of getting a kettle bell for sometime and today finally get to do it.

I drove down to Ruby Industrial Complex at Tannery Road. I spotted their ad in the newspapers and went down to take a look.

I was having a hard time deciding to get the 12 kg or 14kg. The YouTube was recommending 16kg for an average American male. Finally settled with the 14kg.

Came home and watch some tips on kettle bell basic exercises and did a few reps.

Got a feeling my butt is going to ache tomorrow.

Onion soup

2nd day in a row that I'm having onion soup.

This time round at Big Fish Seafood Grill at East Coast Road.

It came in a very shallow bowl, more like a plate, and believe me, it's really shallow.

It's tasty but just a few mouthful, I was already feeling thirsty. Could be the MSG in it.

First time I have fried brown rice. It was mildly tasty, from the ingredients rather than heavy seasoning. It was fried with cubes of capsicum, pineapple and ... I can't remember.

I felt so guiltless, having eaten such healthy meal.

I went to this vegetarian eatery at Central Clark Quay, basement 1 this afternoon for lunch. The place was tastefully done up. It was painted white and furnish with wooden furniture.

The food was fantastic. They serve fusion food and seems really healthy, judging from the ingredients they used.

Siew Boon will definitely love it, the ambience, the music, the food, everything.

Ever since, the loaves are flying off the shelves n the bakers could not keep up with the demand.

When I was there at 1, literally the shelves were empty. The lady at the counter suggested we place an order and go back to pick them up at 5.

I ordered two loaves of fig loaf. Gave one to Siew Boon and she told me this morning her mum loves it. I personally found it just average. The fig not strong enough and would prefer the texture softer.

Salted veggie duck soup

I love this soup which Siew Boon prepared for dinner at her place.
Not too salty but enough to bring out rthe taste of the salted veggie. I personally like it just a little more salty but it was good enough.
Siew Boon was saying that something was lacking in the soup.

She can be so perfectionist.

Japanese curry

I gave Siew Boon the packet of Japanese curry I bought from Japan and the recipe Rika gave me for Japanese curry.

It was successful and went very well with rice.

Tried cooking this simple dish again.

But this time round, I google YouTube for a demo first and learnt from a china produced cooking programme.

I cooked this dish at Siew Boons place and was taken aback when she said she did not have any sugar or salt in her house.

In any case, the dish turned out ok, the best of all my attempts.

The 卤肉饭 (stewed pork rice) was fragrant and tasty At least I found a place in Singapore selling 卤肉饭 which I love.

But for close to S$10, it's a bit pricy for a small bowl.

Sunny is smart.

Do you ever guess that he could unzipped a bag.

I left my bag on the floor, he ransacked my bag and found my little pouch where I kept my cables and charger.
He unzipped it, and chewed on my kindle power cable. I spotted him and stopped him but he already made a cut on the cable.
I wanted to test whether the cable could still charge my kindle but to my horror, my kindle got hanged. I can't reboot it, or anything.
It's lifeless now.

Sob, sob. My poor four month old kindle, died of a freak accident.
Murdered by a dog!

The solution is a very simple one.

I can confidently say that my aunt makes the best 鸡蛋糕 in Singapore.

However, she's closing her bakery due to old age.

I brought some 鸡蛋糕 to my office and colleagues who are my age group really appreciate them.

I'm glad that the 鸡蛋糕 were given to my colleagues as well as their parents and grandparents who said that such superior quality 鸡蛋糕 are hard to find in Singapore nowadays.

Do Miao that's fried to the right texture - crunchy and springy

Bean sprouts, a simple but difficult to master dish but the restaurant managed to do it just right

Taking public transport in Penang allowed me a chance to relive the past.

Teo Chew Opera

Last night I went to a Teo Chew Opera, something which I last done when I was a boy.

It brought back memories of having been to Teo Chew Opera during those kampong (village) days in the 70s. When the temples celebrated special festivals, Teo Chew Opera would be staged. My grandmother who was an avid fan of the opera would carry her own stool and spent the night infront of the temporary erected wooden stage.

There would be mobile street hawkers selling ice cream, ice ball, candy floss etc and this was the reason why we the little ones love the opera eventhough we didn't understand a thing.

Last night, I enjoyed the performance but the experience would be a wonderful one had it not for the two aunties behind me talking non-stop throughout the whole performance.

I wished my grandmother to be alive now so I could bring her to enjoy Teo Chew Opera in today' air-con theater setting. I'm sure she would cherished this experience.
